How many more murders do we have to see for people to realize that they need God
These murderers aren't atheist. They usually grow up in Christian homes. Please read up and learn the statistics before assuming that it is people without God who commit these crimes.
You must admit, Peeples, that if they grew up in "Christian" homes, they surely weren't following Christ's moral imperative, which makes them unChristian. A "Christian" is not known by lip service alone, but by LIVING the example set forth by Christ.
I think we can honestly conclude that they did not know God and certainly could not "hear" His Words; thus, C.J. has it...
CJ, you are so right. With that remember most "Christians" aren't really Christians to begin with.
"Oh but he's not big and strong, so he can't be Scottish!" - The "no real scotsman fallacy"
If Jesus' moral teachings are so great, then how come so many people claiming they follow his teachings do so many bad things? So easily misconstrued.
How is a book riddled with the message of tolerance, love, gentleness, forgiveness, and being non-judgmental, the one most often used to justify intolerance, hate, harshness, condemnation, and judgement? I wonder if I'm reading the same book.
JunkSeller - a great books is like a score. It lies on the page until it is read. The music played by readers of the Bible is their lives. Some play well. Others are, for now, off tune. All we can do is listen, and act, and do it all again humbly.
JunkSeller,
The Bible isn't very clear. There are so many instances where it contradicts itself that it becomes useless as a moral guidance. You're reading the book and thinking your interpretation is 'right'. Everyone else has a different one.
SidKemp. I'm always telling my nephew, "no anger at the piano." He gets frustrated easily. I tell him that ire blocks the flow of the music. Thanks for reminding me as well. I too get frustrated too easily.
Peeples: I have attended 12 different "Christian" denominations in my lifetime. I have served on various church committees and know what I am talking about. In truth, many "church goers" are not much different than Phil2012, Nightwork and Junkseller.
CJ, not living up to your expectations is a compliment. Thanks.
really convenient -- if someone professes to be christian, but doesnt act the way you want them too, you get to label them non-christian!
It shouldn't be that hard to figure out. The Bible clearly states that you can tell a tree by the fruit it bears. 80% of our true character is determined by what what we do in secret. 10% is determined by public deeds and another 10% by what we say.
Billions, probably, for untold millenia to come. And, if the future is like the past, many of them will be done in the name of God.
I hinted at it in my comment, but stopped short. Thanks for being braver than I.
I hadn't heart about CT when I wrote my reply. May we learn and teach the way of Peace, in the name of any religion or none, and heal our hearts so that we stop doing these things. Not legislation, not abstract religion, but a true change of heart.
Sounds good, Sid, but what power is strong enough to overcome the greed, hate, perversion, violence, and darkness that resides in the average human's heart? If you know...I'm all ears.
Probably a whole lot more murders will happen until the end of time. But, I like to see the other side of things, too. So, for every story I read about someone being murdered, I wonder about the number of untold stories of people being helped or saved. The story of a good Samaritan rarely makes the headlines, but the story of murder is broadcasted on every news station in America.
As bad as it is out there, we still have a lot of good happening in the world. We just don't read about positive, uplifting stories or hear about them in the news.
Oh my! I just turned on the TV tonight and heard about the school shootings. I was so unaware this had happened when I made my original comment. I pray for the families, wishing for peace and healing. Even good news would not be satisfactory now.
To my way of seeing things how many murders occuring has little to do with a need for God. God has given us the tools to abate and prevent this type of tragedy. It is not a need for God that is stopping us. It is a failure to act in accordance with His Law of Love. We do not need more God and we do not need more Christians. We need to begin to act as God would have us act. These murderers do not come from a world without others. They come from a place where others have not done enough with and for them. That enough is Love. If God is Love then we have all we need, we just need to get better at distributing it.
Ridiculous - the real question should be:
"When will humanity finally rid itself of religion entirely and how can I help the process along?"
If humanity requires fear to be the foundation of its moral guidance then suffering was one of its natural consequences all along.
About the maturity and intelligence you would expect from a man of faith. Not the loving thing to do - insult without reason, typical.
The sort of thinking that holds back society and leaves it to rot solemnly back into the earth.
I apologize, Phil2012, but most of your comments remind me of the arguments I could garner down at the local junior high school, so I just thought I would make a remark that was "right up your alley". I assessed my target audience and spoke in kind.
For someone that doesn't understand evolution, I think you're being a little too harsh on local junior high schoolers.
Fact is, I have studied evolutionary thought for over 30 years. The problem with macro evolution is that it is flat-out impossible. Those who subscribe to evolutionary theory have a limited grasp on creation, thus they do not realize their fallacy.
Sludge, I think you mean to say 'I studied evolutionary thought over 30 years ago'. Macro evolution has an incredible foundation of evidence, from chromosomal mutations leading up to speciation to the explanation of bacterial evolution. Read up!
How would it even be possible to have a "limited grasp of creation?" God created the world. The end. It is literally 4 words. If you want to be long-winded, you can add, "and everything in it." Still only 8 words.
obviously 30 yrs of 'study' hasnt imparted the basic of evolution or sledge wouldn't make such laughable claims about it; for a preview of his next argument see http://cascoly.hubpages.com/hub/Top-10- … -Evolution
Everyone grab your pen and paper and write the question down. Next time you have occasion to explain non sequitur, you will have the perfect example at your fingertips.
Events such as the one that happened today break our hearts. All I can hope for is that we will perform and receive acts of kindness in the coming days and allow our personal and national broken hearts to heal.
I think many people will see this tragedy as a call, not for Godly living, but for abolishing gun ownership. As it is, our children are just fish in a barrel...just waiting for the next tragedy to occur.
You see, the problem is that we teach our children in public schools that they evolved from a common ancestor with chimpanzees, but when they grow up and act like the animals that they have been brainwashed into believing they are, thus committing predatorial acts like we saw today (12-14-2012)...our educators and social engineers "act" surprised.
Fact is, the social engineers of our day want Americans to act like the creatures of the field - without direction, without morals, without conscience, without faith, without Godliness, and without the ability to critically analyze and think. Oh, and all this without guns - because the dumb chimps would be much easier to control without a means to defend themselves against an aggressive and oppressive government.
By the way, our secular and debased government would rather see this tragedy happen time and again, than to see children learning about God and following the 10 Commandments in school. The government wants to raise mindless drones...not moral citizens. What happend today will be considered collateral damage...a means to a satanic end.
By the way...none of our politicians are dumb enough to have their children enrolled in public schools. Their children are safely tucked away in private - heavily guarded institutions.
Was it something I said?!?!?!?
No, I think what you mean is that I show no fear and the truth is my constant companion.
CJ- i might get banned for saying this but you make me sick .
Nightwork...why would you get banned? I am glad I "make you sick" and I am glad I offend, uninvited writer, and tick off guys like Phil2012 and Earnest. If you people liked me and found favor with me...it would mean I live in deep spiritual darkness.
CJ Sledgehammer, I don't dislike you, I don't know you.
But I do think ill of your intelligence and education - you're clearly not the brightest crayon in the pack but had we known each other, I still might have liked you.
Phil2012: Again...your words ring hollow and are spoken with a forked-tongue. The truth is that you hate me with every fiber of your being. Fact is, if you could silence my voice for good..you would not hesitate. I know a charlatan when I see one.
your ignorance of the basics of evolution is unfortunately all too common in america
Evolution gives rise to little Stallins and Maos. The murderous kid, who just shot up the whole state of Conneticut, was acting upon evolutionary impulses - the survival of the fitest and natural selection...after all, he's just an animal w/o purpose
evolution has 'given rise' to EVERY ORGANISM in existence, so your point is meaningless - u show an ignorance of what evolution actually is [giving u the beneoft of the doubt - alternatively, you're purposely distorting the concept of evolution]
god has nothing to do with it - question is when will congress stand up to the NRA and the rest of the right wing and start realistic gun control -- the current congress couldn't even renew the weak assault weapons ban of the bush era
we need licensing at least as serious as that for driving, a ban on assault weapons and large ammunition clips, registration of guns, closing the gunshow loopholes, etc, etc, etc - we know what has to be done - congress just needs some spine and they'll realize that the country, even many NRA members support these common sense precautions
and, we need MORE spending to find those who commit these atrocities; we obviuosly can't catch every one, but tight now we're CUTTING social programs that might help. but the NRA, more than any other entity has blood on their hands for these massacres.
when will public outrage call this organization to account?
No... you have it wrong. We need to ban all men, because they are always the perps to every crime. Then we need to abolish the color black, because all bad guys wear black. Then we need to stop teachers from having children, because their kids kill.
I frankly don't see a connection between the rage that builds inside people to the point of exploding like it did today, and the NRA. The problem is the uncontrolled rage. If they didn't have guns these people would make bombs and kill.
You are exactly right, Cam. Our government only cares about this situation because they see it as an opportunity to disarm the people.
Cascoly, I apologise for CJ Sledgehammer, you made an informative and intelligent comment - I'm sorry that one of the few yet relentless religious individuals is spoiling your efforts here on HubPages.
The problem many sources. Gun control (which is constitutional, and has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment) can help. Social programs can help. Deeper work to understand the collective & individual consciousness to end fear & violence is th
Phil: So, now I'm spoiling Cascoly's efforts on Hubpages? And, how may I ask, can that be accomplished? Sometimes I think you just say anything...anything at all. It's as if you are infatuated with your own opinion or just like to hear yourself talk.
philanthropy - thanks for your concern, but i don't get too bothered by comments like sludgehummer's
ccma8510 - the connection is that the NRA opposes ANY attempt to regulate weapons - of course that's only part of the problem
Sludgehummer? Now that would be funny if I were still in junior high. But, as it is I shall leave you and your sophomoric quips in peace. There is nothing more I care to hear from you.
What? Why? Is God going to enact gun control legislation? Is he going to repair our broken mental health systems? If we believed a little bit harder would he have appeared in the classroom with an M60, American bandana flag drenched in sweat around his head, like Rambo, and blown the bad guy away? That would have been cool.
I can appreciate wanting God in big ways, but do we really need him to wipe our rear-ends for us. We are theoretically adults aren't we? This isn't really a difficult task. What we need is leadership, courage, and an honest, open discussion. None of that requires divine magic.
Exactly, the more of us committed to actually solving the problem the better, how can people sit back and blame all of our problems on a lack of faith..
what does needing some god have to do with this. leave it to the religious folks to make the most out of this . do you not think that after the last school shooting that all the praying i heard about people doing would have prevented this if there really was a loving god? does your god leave children unprotected just because someone doesn't pray and worship it?saying some god could have prevented this is so absurd, it makes me ill to my stomach that people actually believe it.your god has been worshiped for a long time and when it was even more common to worship, things were even worse. i love how the crusades are forgotten by so many believers.
You know, Nightwork4, for a guy who claims to believe in tolerance, but not in God...you sure spend a great deal of time talking about Him and show strong signs of being one of the most antagonistic, hypocritical and intolerant individuals around.
nightwork4, I agree. Even if we had a nation full of God fearing individuals, just one disturbed person is all it takes to cause a massacre. God, assuming one exists, somehow made us with brains so that we could govern intelligently and responsibly.
How many will it take for Christians to read their Bibles and find out they are God and they are solely responsible for their own thoughts and deeds? How many are going to believe Jesus when he said top his Disciples to go and spread HIS word and if those who they went to did not believe they were to leave them alone? It isn't GOD's Fault or Satan or anything that we cannot see or is imaginary. It is Politics or other religions. It is only us and what we are teaching our children from the moment of birth. It's us who are teaching our children to kill and no one else. How many times will it take for those of you to stop blaming others for what you are doing?
Did I read somewhere that you are a practicing witch?
LOL no witch. People hate truth with a passion. They will twist it to make no sense whatsoever and those who bring it out into the open are they claim Witches or Satan or some Evil thing.l Oh well!
I did not mean to offend you, Lady Guinevere, I truly thought I read a comment somewhere concerning as much. I apologize for being wrong. Yes, I will have to resort to blaming others for what is going on in this country, because I am not the problem.
You didn't offend me. I have been called worse things than that.

Is it more important to study the Bible or to live a Christlike life?I am asking this because I see a huge amount of debate about doctrine, evolution, stem cells, premarital sex and so on, out there in US society, yet I feel convinced that, if Jesus lived today, he would not be engaging in these...
